HOSTS for HOSPITALS
From time to time when within our existing host network we do not have a host-home
available to meet the specific lodging needs of a particular family, we send out a broad
email so that we may hopefully find such a home.
We now have need of a home at which Arabic is spoken. The patient is a 9 year-old
Iraqi boy, Ali, who will be treated at the Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia. With him will
be his 55 year-old grandmother. They will need lodging for at least a month starting on
November 9.
A flight surgeon / ER physician from the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center who served
in Iraq earlier this year brought this lodging need to our attention:
"I was asked to see a lovely 9 year old boy who was brought to our
volunteer clinic by his father. He has a severe congenital defect of
his thoracic cage where his ribs are fused on one side and he has
developed a severe scoliosis secondary to this. This type of
abnormality if left uncorrected will result in death due to cardiac
and pulmonary compromise. Fortunately, the Shriners Hospital
for Children in Philadelphia has agreed to perform the corrective
surgery.
Ali is a very intelligent young child who wants to be a doctor when
he grows up. I would be most grateful to you and your organization
if you could find an Arabic speaking family with whom he and his
grandmother could stay. Your organization and the host family
will be making a real difference in the life of a child who has so
much promise.
Dean L. Winslow, MD
Clinical Professor of Medicine
Stanford University School of Medicine."
A picture of Ali will be provided in a follow-up email.
The guests are fine with pets and stairs, and, will have transportation provided for them.
They are wonderful individuals, as witnessed first-hand by Dr. Winslow. If you or someone
you know may be able to help them for any of the period of time for which they need lodging,
please contact me ASAP.
As always, thank you so much for your time in receiving these emails and your support of
the HOSTS for HOSPITALS program.

SUSTAIN
Philly announces the launch of a tax day campaign called LOVE PHILLY: Bring Our Money Home. This three-month campaign demands that our tax dollars stop destroying in Palestine and start building in
Philadelphia.
Right now, billions of dollars each year go from U.S. taxpayers to the Israeli military, funding the destruction of Palestinian homes, agriculture, and infrastructure. At the same time, people in the U.S. -- including in
Philadelphia -- face crises around health-care, housing, and education. Federal taxes need to come home to support our cities instead of a militarized, racist foreign policy in Palestine,
Iraq, and around the world.
LOVE PHILLY will raise awareness in
Philadelphia about where our tax dollars are going and where they're not going, the violence they're funding in Palestine and the positive change they could make if they were redirected to fund our city's needs.
This campaign's first event will be a Valentine's Day letter-writing party. We'll send valentines to mayoral candidates reminding them that they should be advocating for the city we love. They should be paying attention to where the money Philadelphians put into the federal pot goes, and demanding that it come back here, toward affordable, accessible health care, housing, and education, instead of sponsoring occupation in Palestine. Come to learn more about the campaign, meet others who are interested, and spread the word about where our tax money is and isn't going.
To get involved in SUSTAIN or to connect a group you work with this campaign , email sustainphilly [at] gmail.com.
Visit the SUSTAIN Philly blog [ sustainphilly.blogspot.com] to endorse the campaign and get action updates leading up to April 17! _________________________________________________
